What role should sales managers play? It has been my observation that an effective, highly skilled sales manager can make a successful sales team unusually successful. And a poor one can totally destroy it. A great sales manager can make an average team perform to unusually high standards.

Being a sales manager is far different from being a manager of any other type. First, you are dealing, quite often, with people who are either geographically disbursed, or are, at least, out of the office regularly. You are dealing with lots of intangible, emotional issues that are beyond your direct control - and perhaps most essential to understand is that you are lending people who, for the most part, don’t care to be closely monitored, led or managed.
